Dave –

I wanted to drop you a note to say thanks for the True TSX Elliptical.  It’s just a fantastic machine.  It’s a bit scary to buy something this large and this expensive long distance.  However, I can’t say enough about the way you handled every step – from responding to my continual questions, to the price, shipping and follow-up.

First off, I really didn’t expect you to devote such effort to the shipping. The rate was great, it arrived right on schedule, the carrier was incredibly courteous and, most importantly, the elliptical was in perfect condition.  As I mentioned, I had gotten someone who works with a well-known exercise equipment retailer here in the Northeast to help me get it into our basement.   When he first arrived, he was sure that I was kidding about the price.  Moreover, he reiterated throughout the installation that many of the “new” machines he installs are not in this kind of condition. I’ve now been using if for a little over a week, and to say that I’m “thrilled” is an understatement.

I really can’t imagine how this purchase could have gone any better. You went above and beyond to make it not only easy -- but an absolute pleasure. Now, I guess the burden’s on me to develop those six-pack abs…

Thanks for everything.

Most everyone will agree that training on cardiovascular equipment can be tedious and time consuming most exercisers either love it or hate it. Most books and trainers will teach you to perform cardiovascular as part of your fat loss program for the best results. Cardio training for fat loss is best performed either first thing in the morning before breakfast or after your weight training session when you have depleted your carbohydrates and fat will be the preferred fat source for fuel. Duration can vary from 20-minutes to 1 hours at a low intensity depending on your level of fitness as those who eat well and do cardio 3-5 sessions a week typically will respond well to fewer sessions as a rule of thumb while those in need of more fat loss will need to go the extra distance until they reach a certain level of conditioning.

Most fitness advocates would not recommend running or super high intensity cardiovascular training as you may then increase your chance for injuries and also begin to burn more carbohydrates rather than fat for the preferred energy source and this can result in actually burning good energy and even muscle.

Microburst Burn Fat

There are however a few variations to cardio training that can be effective in addition to long duration moderate intensity forms. Just as it is important to change up your exercises, intensity and duration with weight training so as to keep the body responding to the exercise this is also true with your cardiovascular training. One great method is to complete microburst where you eat lower carbohydrates for a few days and during this time crank up the cardio and perform intervals of higher and lower intensity with 30-60 second microburst of powerful cycling and then resume a moderate resting pace. Similar to sprinting, have you ever seen a fat sprinter? I assume not. You can perform this on any type of equipment such as a treadmill or an elliptical or my favorite, which is a bike or stationary cycle. Spinning is also a great form for this type of training. You can get better results by switching up the machines that you utilize and mix in some slow steady cardio sessions and vary the length. When you use the microburst you can usually accomplish a better metabolic boost for several hours afterwards.

Follow up your high intensity cardio days with a few relaxed duration cardio or better yet skip a few days eat a little bit more to rev up the metabolism and then when you feel rested up start the microburst low carbohydrate days again for 2-3 days. I promise you will be happy with the results

Quality brands are important; as the old saying goes “you get what you pay for”. If you seek out quality equipment you will typically find that the craftsmanship, warranties and life expectancy is much longer than some equipment you may find at a huge discount or from another country. It is imperative to do some homework and consider the length of time the line has been on the market, the reviews of other customers  and repair history. For more information on repair history contact a commercial fitness repair company to determine the best for repairs and lifespan.

I do believe some consumers become so focused on one or two brand they are familiar with that they overlook the quality commercial fitness equipment brands that are on the market. In recent years most large commercial gyms have chosen brands such as Life Fitness, & Hammer Strength and Precor cardio. These equipment brands are great choices because they are some of the largest providers of commercial fitness and have become the strongest leaders in the industry and are able to demand high prices for their pieces in fact new Life Fitness equipment can usually only be bought direct from Life Fitness and they do not offer dealer distribution through the normal distribution channels. Due to the price demands of these manufacturers sometimes it makes good sense to consider other quality equipment for commercial facilities that most consumers are unaware of like: Paramount Fitness and True Fitness. They furnish equipment to large universities, residential facilities like condos and apartment fitness centers and corporate gyms. Also if your searching for used or refurbished fitness equipment, you can usually locate refurbished exercise equipment designed under some of these top brands with less mileage and of the same quality. Below are some of the most popular commercial fitness equipment brands.

We purchase equipment at wholesale typically from gyms that are closing, updating equipment from a two or 3year lease end or facilities such as corporate gyms that will no longer offer a fitness center. Once we win a bid for the equipment we typically have our factory certified technicians review the equipment to determine what should to be done to bring it to full working order. As you can imagine some of the commercial fitness equipment such as that from corporate gyms can look as if it was hardly used and other used gym equipment can look as if no one ever took the time to clean it or service it. Here are the ways we categorize our used fitness equipment and what we do to bring it up to resell standards.

Typically low usage corporate fitness equipment in good working order
A technician analyzes each machine and all parts that are worn or damaged are replaced
The machine is tested and repaired to excellent working order
The machine is cleaned and serviced
Price is usually listed at 30-50% of the original MSRP depending on usage
Sold as is with 60-90 day guarantee warranties if you are within our service area

Typically higher usage fitness equipment taken from a commercial gym, apartment complex or municipality
A technician analyzes each machine and all parts that are worn or damaged are replaced
The machine is tested and repaired to excellent working order
The machine is cleaned and serviced
Cosmetically reviewed any replacement of seats, touch up paint replace damaged electronic boards,
Price is usually listed at 40-50% of the original MSRP
90 –180 day warranties

Typically higher usage fitness equipment taken from a commercial gym, apartment complex or municipality
Fitness equipment usually has high wear and tear and is unassembled by our technicians
The body is sanded and painted
All working parts are individually tested and all damaged or broken parts replaced
Equipment is reassembled
Price is listed at 50-65% of the original MSRP
Up to a 12-month warranties

90% of the equipment we purchase and sell fall into the first two categories as the cost involved in remanufacturing fitness equipment is often to high to provide quality used fitness equipment to the consumer who is looking for a great deal. We only utilized the remanufacturing process on the highest demand brand name gym pieces such as the Precor and Life Fitness brands.

What are the benefits of choosing used over new fitness equipment?

Aside from a much lower price if your looking for a quality piece for the home or to replace a machine that is worn out for a lower usage commercial setting such a personal trainer gyms, corporate gyms or apartment or condo exercise facilities then this can be a good option to reducing out of pocket cost, just as a good used automobile can provide many more years of service even though the minute you drive it off the lost it depreciates so it is with commercial fitness equipment. The life expectancy for commercial gym equipment is designed to withstand non-stop usage for many years and many of the units we obtain are within 2-5 years in age. Therefore you can expect many more years of uninterrupted use.

Many consumers ask us about warranties on the used equipment. Usually factory warranties on commercial equipment are no more than 1-2 years for parts and labor. Industry standards for cardiovascular equipment are as follows: Lifetime warranty on frame/ 2-years parts/ 1-year labor. Once out of factory warranty it’s the owner’s responsibility to cover cost of repair and parts. While offering warranties on used equipment is a risk, we have implemented minor warranties on our work as an offer of good will basically stating that we stand by our work and will either repair it if your located within Tampa Bay service area or send you the part that is needed for if within the warranty term specified. Our sister company Coastal Fitness Services provides , installation ,service and preventative maintenance of top commercial fitness equipment.

Servicing Your Apartment Fitness Center Is an Important Aspect of Your Communities Amenities

Providing a fitness exercise center for apartment/condo communities these days is practically a required amenity to offer residents these days.  Residents view the convenience of an apartment fitness center as both an amenity for time and budget since as a new resident he/she knows that they can exercise before or after work in the community without traveling to a distant gym or the cost associated with joining a outside gym. The potential resident will certainly be more inclined to live there.

Ongoing Apartment Fitness Equipment Servicing is the Key to Proper Maintenance

On the downside have you ever been to an apartment community that does not take care of the equipment? They allow kids to go in there and play around and the equipment becomes damaged and of course, this is never a good reflection on your community or the amenities offered. Most apartment communities and condos have a service agent that maintains the property premises, but all to often we have seen these agents employed to also service the equipment only to cause further damage. Short cuts never work. Simply find a preventative maintenance plan that fits the property manager’s budget and watch the long-term savings.

Athletic Concepts works with property managers and developers on sales and service and preventative maintenance agreements for apartment fitness facilities. We provide Design services, layouts for your demographics and space. If you have older equipment and want to upgrade we can in most cases work with you on a trade in value and extraction of old equipment. Our service department offers authorized  fitness equipment technicians from all major commercial manufacturers to come to your facility to determine what need to be done to get your equipment in working order and get it operational quickly. More importantly we can set up an ongoing plan depending on the amount of hours the equipment is in use to keep your facility running at full speed for your residents.

Athletic Concepts Offers:

• Sales of New and Refurbished fitness equipment
• Initial design/layout Free for our customers
• Equipment selection for your demographics
• Repair/ Preventative maintenance services
• Accessories / Flooring

Today’s Fitness manufacturers offer so many options in fitness equipment it can be difficult to determine the best options without consulting with a commercial fitness equipment dealer. We are seeing more fitness centers going into Retirement communities, Rehabilitation facilities and even nursing homes. The baby boomer market will eventually increase the need for fitness centers in these types of facilities. The real question is what equipment should you place in these types of facilities to insure a quality workout and avoid injures in the senior market fitness centers.

Safe Strength Training For Senior Fitness

One popular option is the hydraulic circuit fitness equipment; hydraulic fitness equipment has gained momentum with female fitness studios like shapes and other personal trainer facilities, as is an excellent choice for senior fitness. These circuits are perfect for short workouts as they can be arranged into a quick circuit where users can move rather quickly through the exercise routine. Hydraulic circuits can provide excellent metabolic, muscle and strength improvements for the user with less risk of injury since the resistance does not include weights or weight stacks. This can be very important for rehabilitation, as self-progression is slower and not likely to result in over exertion or re-injury of the affected area.

Cardiovascular Fitness Options for Seniors

While age does not prevent one from using any form of cardiovascular equipment there are some choices that seem more safe and or sensible for obtaining a good workout with little risk of injury. The Treadmill is still a good choice as walking provides a great form of calorie burning and conditioning of the heart and lungs. Most gyms will usually only order a few bikes or cycles and even less recumbent cycles but we have determined this to be a favorite among the seniors for cardio training. Recumbent cycles are designed with a larger seat and offer a backrest over the traditional upright bikes. Recumbent cycles offer a easy entry as the bike sits much lower to the ground and many of the newer bikes have a walk through frame design which prevents the user from having to step over the frame of the bike, they can simply sit down and peddle at their own capacity.
Recumbent cycles also offer little to no impact and can allow a user to exercise even if they have arthritis in the knees, ankles or back or hip injuries. Certainly a viable option for rehabilitation or nursing homes where users may have much less mobility. Some of the newer recumbent are also offering models that include upper body exercise arms so the user can work on a recumbent similar to upper body ergo meter or elliptical machines design working both upper and lower body. There are even a few manufacturers that develop rehabilitation exercise equipment specific to duplicate the sitting and standing muscles so that seniors can maintain their mobility and strength for daily activities.

What to Look For When Purchasing Senior Fitness Equipment:
Fitness Equipment that is safe for older or less experienced users
Fitness Equipment that allows for users who may have less mobility
Fitness Equipment that does not require full time spotting or Personal Trainer
Fitness Equipment that allows you to increase intensity at a safe progression
Fitness Equipment that facilitates the faster circuit training style workouts
Fitness Equipment that is easy to adjust for proper resistance and fit
Fitness Equipment that will improve the strength and not intimidate the user
Comfortable practical and make the user feel exercised but not exhausted

Hydraulic circuits and recumbent cycles can be perfect for those who are on the road to recovery from previous injuries, anyone looking for muscle toning without complicated resistance adjustments. The equipment is certainly safer and less likely to result in strains and joint impact to the inexperienced fitness equipment user while still providing a fast and efficient workout

I often get this question from customers who are looking for cardiovascular equipment. According to wikipedia the first elliptical trainer was designed by a man named Larry D. Miller back in the year 2004 and was patented and marketed by Precor Fitness. The idea was to develop a machine that most closely replicated the movement of running without the impact on the joints.

Over the past  5-6 years ellipticals have taken the fitness industry by storm and every fitness equipment manufacturer has jumped on the bandwagon to develop the next revolutionary elliptical. Initially most elliptcials only worked the lower body with the Precor being one of the few that offered a variation in ramp height which has made even the older used model Precor ellipticals remain in high demand. Many will agree that elliptical trainers have tremendous popularity almost eliminating the old stairmaster as the optional cardio training choice in todays state of the art facilities. People often ask about the  elliptical stride length also and I have found there to be little or no effect on the quality of the workout other than what feels comfortable to the user. Most high end ellipticals for the home or commercial have anywhere from 17.5 to 21 inch stride length and will probably not make much difference unless your very short or very tall.

Are there Benefits Of Elliptical Trainers over Treadmills?

Elliptical Trainers create less impact on the knees, feet, hips and back and therefore reduce the stress on the joints when compared to similar intensity on a treadmill.  Todays newer ellipticals offer both lower body and upper body training which bring more muscles into action and can intensify the workout. Studies have shown that the two machines work the heart lungs and burn calories in much the same fashion. Runners seem to prefer treadmills while others are just looking for some different to make the exercise experience more interesting. Treadmills have been around a long time and they have proved effective at burning calories and improving cardiovascular function so for most of us it really comes down to preference.

Prevention is the key to extended Use of Fitness Equipment

You know the old saying “an ounce of prevention goes a long way” well the saying is true when you consider most gym owners are oblivious to the condition of the fitness equipment until the gym user reports that its not working or one of the trainers realizes that smoke is coming from the motor. While it’s understandable that the owner cannot monitor all the equipment all the time it goes to show that it only make sense to use prevention to keep the equipment in good working order for the members benefit, to prevent liability issues and to reduce overall cost of the equipments downtime. Downtime deters new members from joining, upsets current members, and more importantly cost more to have a service technician make a special rush trip to analyze the problem, order parts and get the equipment back in working order.

A Routine Maintenance Program For Every Type of Facility

Regardless of what type of fitness facility you operate there is a preventative maintenance agreement that will work for you. This really depends on what type of volume of membership you have and usage of the fitness equipment. Your authorized service technician can help you at the time of the initial PM quote to determine how often the service calls should be scheduled. PM agreements can be set up monthly for high traffic facilities like large scale health clubs, YMCA’s, school athletic centers or quarterly or semiannually for smaller facilities like personal trainer studios, corporate gyms, and apartments and condominium fitness centers.

Long term Planning Equates to Long Term Savings

Proper planning will reduce the cost associated with downtime, injuries that can result in enormous liability lawsuits. When you overlook a plan for maintaining the fitness equipment you deplete the profits and selling points of the facility. You can save a tremendous amount of money by extending the life of the gym equipment and taking full advantage of the warranties for parts and labor before they expire. Once expired your left not only paying service but also the parts, labor and neglect expense. This often results in being forced to replace the equipment well before you should have to. Preventative maintenance should not be overlooked and can save you more money by implementing it early in the life of your fitness facility.

Many people today are looking for the magic pill potion or surgery to stay trim. The biggest excuse is time. “ I don’t have enough time” Do you watch TV? If the answer is yes then you have time. All you need is to form the habit for it to take root and you can stay lean and mean by simply being consistent. The best time for fat burning is first thing in the morning and right after you weight train because this is when you have the lowest (glycogen) levels in the blood. Glycogen is energy derived from carbohydrates. First thing in the morning after a 6-8 hour fast your body is primed for fat loss and again after you have depleted it after a 45-minute weight training routine. I suggest investing in a nice piece of cardio equipment for your home. When you get up grab some java and jump on the treadmill or elliptical, bike or even go for a speed walk. I like the treadmill, CNN and a cup of Joe. I walk a half hour then stretch. This is a great way to start your day and get your body into calorie burning mode. Then consume 4-5 small meals and hit the weights after work. If you do this consistently for 8 weeks I promise you will create a habit because you will like what you see in the mirror.
